LLANWARNE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY 2012 PLOUGHING MATCH

HELD AT MERRYHILL FARM, BELMONT, HEREFORD KINDLY HOSTED BY BRIAN & MERVYN THOMAS ON SATURDAY 8TH SEPTEMBER

A few weeks before it was touch and go whether we would be able to host the Ploughing Match due to the severe weather conditions and late harvest. The site was only combined on the Wednesday with the straw baled and cleared the following day. Fortunately there were no ruts of consequence on the ploughing field although one damp area where the marquees and parking were.

Some 50 Ploughmen arrived with 3 horse teams the most contested classes being in the vintage with the overall ploughman being Derek Needham from Kings Lynn who won the high cut class. The site was just off the main Hereford to Abergavenny road and over 200 people came through the gate and there was a good pleasant atmosphere throughout the day.

The day started off very misty and the sheep dogs could not run until the mist had cleared developing into a pleasant dry and sunny day. Regrettably the National Sheep Dog Trials were being held close to Cardiff on the same day so the numbers were down although there were some good competitive trialing seen by an appreciative audience.

As usual the produce and handicraft marquee was well supported with some excellent entries forward, the overall winner being Mrs. C Garlick.

Everyone was so delighted that the Match and Trials could take place and a big thank you to Brian and Mervyn for leaving the combining as late as possible to provide the best ploughing conditions possible.
